Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty procedure In Delhi

What is kyphoplasty procedure?

Kyphoplasty is used for pain relief after osteoporotic vertebral fracture. This procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Patient has to lie down on his tummy for around 15 minutes. A needle is put in the back and is advanced into vertebral body. A ballon is inserted and vertebral end plates are elevated. This helps in restoring the vertebral height and prevent the post traumatic kyphosis. After restoring the vertebral height cement is injected into vertebra. It is a high viscosity cement which is injected under low pressure into vertebral body.

Can it be done in young patients with fracture?

No. Kyphoplasty is indicated only in painful osteoporotic fractures in elderly.

Are their any side effects or complications after the procedure?

Cement leakage can occur during the kyphoplasty procedure. If cement leakage occurs most of the times it is a symptomatic. If cement leaks into neural canal or foramina it can result in post operative pain and rarely neural deficit ( but it is very very rare!!!)

When can the patient be discharged after procedure?

It is a day care procedure. All the patients are discharged the same day after procedure.

What to expect after kyphoplasty procedure?

There is an immediate pain relief after the procedure.

What is the difference between vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty?

In vertebroplastyonly cement is injected into the vertebral body. No balloon is put in the vertebral body. There is no restoration of vertebral height with vertebroplasty. Chances of cement leakage are slightly higher in vertebroplasty than kyphoplasty.
